Vesil Krupič, speaking to the BBC, described the horrific scenes of battles in the eastern Donbass region, recounting his personal survival during Russian attacks. However, Krupič’s ordeal continued in December of last year, when, while serving in the rear, he was attacked by his own compatriots. The attack occurred during an operation to locate men who had avoided military conscription.
Krupič stated that two individuals refused to show their personal identification and attempted to flee. When his patrol pursued them, Krupič was severely beaten with an iron rod. He subsequently required six weeks of hospitalization due to a broken rib, recalling, “I lay on the ground and couldn’t breathe.”
A Ukrainian military human rights guard noted that such incidents are not isolated.
The guard reported over 600 such attacks against conscripts, describing these assaults as having become routine and presenting a significant issue. This problem is particularly acute as Ukraine faces increasing difficulties in mobilizing new soldiers during the fifth year of the conflict.
