Žaberl: Attack on a representative of the state should be treated the most strictly

Miroslav Žaberl, a security expert from the Faculty of Security Studies, stated during the 24UR NEWS program that he concurs with the views expressed by Minister Matoz and the Mayor of Kočevje. The core concern shared by these figures, and echoed by Žaberl, centers on the perceived sluggishness of judicial authorities. This delay, according to the expert, diminishes the deterrent effect of the law, potentially emboldening individuals to commit acts of violence, including direct attacks against law enforcement personnel.

Žaberl addressed the issue by referencing the behavior of repeat offenders. He noted that when an individual, who has already been convicted of serious crimes and whose sentence remains unexecuted, continues to commit offenses, it raises questions regarding the efficacy of the judicial system in ensuring accountability. He suggested that the current process may not be sufficiently robust to bring such dangerous persons to justice effectively.

Furthermore, the expert emphasized the symbolic nature of violence against state agents. He asserted that any attack on a police officer constitutes an assault on the state’s representation. Consequently, Žaberl argued that such acts must be met with correspondingly severe measures.

The discussion highlighted the critical need to reassess the mechanisms of state security to prevent further instances where individuals feel empowered to challenge law enforcement through violence.
