Potential toxic cyanobacteria have been discovered again in Bohinjsko jezero

An observable bloom of algae has developed in Šobčev bajer, with local experts attributing the growth to recent elevated temperatures and reduced water circulation. While the visible increase in algae has given the pond a distinctly greener hue, officials maintain that recreational activities remain safe. Uroš Ambrožič, the director of the Šobec camp, confirmed that swimming is currently safe for the public.

However, Ambrožič issued a cautionary advisory, noting that while the water is safe, the algae itself can pose minor irritations for certain individuals. He specified that sensitive swimmers might experience symptoms such as itching or rashes. To mitigate potential contact issues, regular showering is recommended, a practice that is reportedly already being followed by visitors.

Despite the assurance provided by the camp director and confirmation from the Environmental Agency regarding the safety of swimming, some researchers have expressed increased concern regarding the extent of the algae bloom in the broader Lake Bohinj area. To monitor the ecosystem’s health, the ARS facility conducts comprehensive water quality testing on a bi-weekly basis. These regular analyses are crucial for understanding the environmental factors contributing to the proliferation of the algae.

The ongoing monitoring aims to provide the most accurate assessment of water conditions, ensuring public safety while tracking the natural biological cycles occurring within the lake.
