Workers noticed the bending of the columns, a large-scale evacuation was initiated

New York City authorities were dispatched to 42nd Street around 8:00 a.m. after construction personnel observed structural anomalies within a building currently undergoing renovation. According to reports, workers noticed that the steel columns supporting the structure on the 21st floor were exhibiting significant bending.

Following this observation, sections of the building’s facade began to shed bricks. Further details provided by sources indicated that inspectors had identified multiple structural cracks, suggesting that the ground beneath the 21st through 26th floors had settled. In response to the escalating risk of collapse, all construction workers were immediately evacuated from the site.

Police subsequently secured the area by closing nearby streets and initiating evacuations of adjacent buildings as a precautionary measure. The structure in question was previously the headquarters for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Currently, the building is slated for conversion into a high-end residential complex comprising approximately 1,500 apartments.

The discovery of the compromised structural integrity prompted an immediate and comprehensive safety response from city officials to mitigate potential hazards associated with the ongoing conversion work.
