Piran expects 50 cruise ships this year, introducing a new tourist tax

The Piran municipality has confirmed a significantly positive trend regarding the volume of cruise ship arrivals. Data indicates that in 2024, the number of major cruise vessels docking in the area surpassed those of 2023 by 14 arrivals. Last year, the two primary cruise ship agents managed a total of 36 arrivals.

For the coming year, projections estimate this number will rise to approximately 50 arrivals. These vessels are anticipated to bring a significant number of visitors. Current estimates suggest that over 15,000 passengers will visit Piran this year, with the potential to reach 17,000 if seasonal conditions remain favorable.

Furthermore, the port expects to accommodate between 10,000 and 12,000 crew members. To manage increased tourism revenue, the municipality is implementing a new daily tourist flat rate fee for passengers disembarking from cruise ships starting this year. Under this system, cruise ship operators are charged between 2,000 and 3,200 euros per individual arrival, with the exact amount varying based on the total number of passengers aboard.

It is important to note that while the municipality collects these fees, the resulting revenue stream is managed by the municipality itself, rather than being directly allocated to the city’s general revenue.
