More expensive purchases from Chinese online stores. What is changing?

A new European Union customs duty structure has taken effect, impacting buyers making online purchases from China. The system introduces specific fees based on the composition and quantity of goods purchased. For instance, a buyer placing an order containing a mix of items, such as one t-shirt, one pair of pants, and one pair of shoes, must now pay an additional nine euros.

If the order consists of three items from the same product category, such as three t-shirts, the supplementary charge will be three euros. These stipulations outline how the EU intends the system to function for incoming goods. According to Fursa Boris Kastelic, Director of the Customs Office, the practical implementation varies across major e-commerce platforms.

He noted that on large online marketplaces, such as Tmall, the customs duty appears to be integrated directly into the shopping basket total. Kastelic confirmed that upon checking the platform, both the duty and the associated fees were already calculated and charged within the basket, indicating the buyer will be required to pay both amounts. Specifically, the Tmall platform has reportedly established a dedicated section or category for European buyers.

This integration suggests that the duty is being pre-calculated and applied at the point of sale. This new requirement ensures that customs duties are accounted for upfront, affecting the total cost for various types of orders, whether they contain a diverse selection of products or multiple units of a single item.
