The Environmental Agency (Arso) has reported observing the formation of scum on localized areas of Lake Bohinj during the recent heat wave. Arso stated that it is currently not possible to determine if the scum poses a threat due to the presence of toxins. Nevertheless, the agency has issued advisories recommending caution for individuals swimming with children and dogs, and advises against swimming in areas where scum is present.
Separately, Arso noted the proliferation of plankton green algae within the Šobčevem bajer. The agency explained that this growth is attributed to minimal water flow through the pond, resulting in the algae being distributed throughout the entire water column and imparting a distinct green coloration to the water. The reports indicate distinct environmental observations related to the lake’s water quality following the heat period.
While the scum formation warrants caution regarding recreational use, the algal bloom in the Šobčevem bajer is linked to hydrological conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to assess potential risks associated with both the surface scum and the elevated levels of plankton green algae.
