The number of extremists is increasing, the most of them are in the AfD

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) reported in its annual findings that the number of individuals assessed as potential right-wing extremists reached 58,700 over the past year. This figure represents an increase of 8,450 compared to the preceding year’s assessment. The German intelligence service has maintained scrutiny over the AfD, the nation’s largest opposition group, due to ongoing concerns regarding potential unconstitutional activities.

According to the BfV’s estimates, approximately 28,000 of the party’s membership—which the AfD reported at 70,000 members as of last October—were classified as right-wing extremists. Last year, the BfV officially designated the AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization. The service cited concerns that the party’s actions undermine human dignity and pose a threat to democratic principles.

The classification by the BfV has been a subject of legal dispute. In response to this designation, the AfD initiated legal proceedings, challenging the grounds upon which the party was categorized. These reports underscore the ongoing tension between the state’s monitoring efforts and the political activities of the AfD concerning extremist elements within the political spectrum.
