Vučić introduces “short compulsory service”

According to statements made by Vučić, the initiation of bureaucratic procedures precedes the commencement of a short military service scheduled for March. He stated that this measure is intended to bolster national defense capabilities. This discussion follows earlier announcements made by the Serbian President in early 2020, when he indicated that the introduction of compulsory military service might occur in December 2026 or March 2027, projecting a duration of 75 days.

The final implementation date remains subject to decision by the Serbian Parliament. The concept of reinstating compulsory military service has been a subject of discussion within the Serbian Parliament for several years. The initiative gained more tangible structure in January 2024, when the General Staff of the Serbian Army formally proposed the reintroduction of conscription to the President.

Subsequently, President Vučić signed the agreement in September of the same year confirming support for the return of compulsory military service. The current plans suggest a phased approach, starting with preparatory administrative steps before the anticipated short service begins in March. These developments highlight the ongoing efforts to strengthen defense readiness through structured military service.

The legislative body retains the authority to finalize the details and timing of any national compulsory program.
