An incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at a popular natural swimming area located beneath a waterfall. The event involved a ten-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man who jumped into a pool where the boy’s father was already swimming. The three individuals were subsequently caught in a strong water whirlpool, which carried them toward the bottom of the river, which has a depth of 2.5 meters.
Due to the powerful return current, the swimmers were unable to swim back to the surface. The situation was observed from the riverbank by the ten-year-old boy’s 40-year-old uncle. The uncle immediately entered the water and successfully retrieved his unconscious nephew from the whirlpool.
Separately, another witness managed to pull the 22-year-old man from the water; however, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Rescue efforts continued until the ten-year-old boy was located by emergency personnel several minutes later, approximately 300 meters downstream from the original site. He was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Feldkirch, where he received treatment and was subsequently discharged.
