A large exhibition of the Laibach group in Portorož

An exhibition curated by Ivo Saliger (alias Ivan Novak), a founding member of laibach, and Borut Bažec, the director of the Portorož Auditorium, presents a comprehensive artistic experience. The organizers clarify that the display is not intended as a retrospective but rather as a unified, total installation exploring themes of national identity, ritual, history, and collective imagination. The title of the show draws reference to the work of contemporary German artist Anselm Kiefer.

The physical components of the exhibition are divided into four distinct sets. Central to the display are several large paintings derived from the Instrumentalnost državnega stroja series. These works are executed upon an industrial tapestry and function as enlargements of early promotional posters dating from 1980 to 1987.

Complementing the visual art is the spatial installation titled Rdeči revirji + črni križ. This piece draws specific inspiration from the industrial topography of the Zasavje district, incorporating artistic motifs developed by Janez Knež. Furthermore, visitors can engage with the Assimilator, an interactive audio monolith designed to operate as an absorption system.

The overall exhibition showcases a multi-sensory approach to cultural memory. The involvement of laibach provides a distinct artistic anchor, guiding the audience through an exploration of structured cultural narratives. (Photo credit: Laibach PHOTO: Nika H.
