Died from poisoning: prepared a salad with poisonous plant

Dr. Miran Brvar, the director of the Clinical Toxicology and Pharmacology Centre at Ljubljana’s University Hospital, detailed the cause of death in a public announcement. He confirmed that the individual died from autumn hazelnut poisoning.

A 70-year-old man residing in the Dolenjska region mistakenly identified autumn hazelnuts as chives. Simultaneously, a 60-year-old woman from Štajerska confused the nuts with wild parsnip. Both individuals prepared the toxic plant, incorporating it into a salad.

Following consumption, the man experienced significant digestive issues. Tragically, he succumbed to the poisoning two days after the initial exposure. Dr.

Brvar explained that autumn hazelnut poisoning typically presents with digestive distress, appearing approximately two to twelve hours post-ingestion. Symptoms usually include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and intense diarrhea. He further elaborated that the second and third days of the poisoning are characterized by organ failure.

“Heart failure, kidneys, liver, and bone marrow,” Brvar specified, highlighting the progression of the condition. Ultimately, this leads to death.
