Disruption Affects Extensive German Railway Network
A significant disruption impacted German railways this morning due to a malfunction within the GSM-R digital railway communication system, a critical component for communication between train drivers and traffic control centers. Deutsche Bahn confirmed the issue caused widespread delays across the network. Following a 90-minute outage, all trains have resumed operations.
Deutsche Bahn Director Evelyn Palla stated that the situation was stabilized using the system’s emergency protocols and that an investigation into the root cause of the malfunction is underway. The disruption extended beyond high-speed ICE trains, affecting regional and suburban services throughout Germany. In Berlin, S-Bahn local train service was temporarily suspended, and commuters were directed to utilize alternative public transport options.
Similarly, suburban train service in the Bavarian capital was completely halted. Reports indicate that all trains were temporarily stopped at stations or at their departure points while the issue was addressed. Deutsche Bahn is currently focused on determining the precise nature of the technical failure and implementing preventative measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
