Severe Storms Impact Slovenia, Leaving Damage in Komenda
Multiple severe storms across Slovenia caused significant disruption over the weekend, with a particularly devastating event occurring in Komenda on June 10th. Flooding in the capital city, Ljubljana, on Saturday resulted in vehicles becoming stranded in waterlogged underpasses. These storms have been consistently linked to ongoing heat waves, driven by atmospheric instability.
Meteorologist Brane Gregorčič from ARS explained that the formation of thunderstorms requires specific conditions – namely, significant atmospheric instability coupled with high ground-level temperatures and humidity. The storm that devastated Komenda was identified as a “supercell” thunderstorm. Supercells are characterized by a rotating eyewall, allowing them to travel considerable distances and maintain their intensity.
Almost two weeks after the initial event, repair efforts are ongoing throughout the municipality of Komenda. Following the powerful storm, numerous residents, including the Bohinčevs, sustained damage to their properties. The Bohinčevs experienced a complete roof loss, a common outcome for many homes within the affected area.
Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns as Slovenia grapples with the ongoing impact of these intense storms.
