‘We must not normalize the fact that drivers look at their phones on the motorway’

Progress in Rescue Belt Culture on Slovenian Roads, But Challenges Persist

Anže Albreht, founder of the Reševalni pas (Rescue Belt) institute, highlighted advancements in the adoption of rescue belts on Slovenian motorways and expressways during a recent media statement. He noted significant progress in establishing this safety practice across the country. However, Albreht also identified ongoing challenges, particularly regarding driver understanding.

A key area of confusion centers around the correct implementation of rescue belts on sections designed for three lanes of traffic moving in one direction – a configuration increasingly common on Slovenian roads. The institute stresses that individuals are frequently observed exiting vehicles in traffic jams and engaging in activities such as walking, playing, or cycling while using safety belts. “This poses a life-threatening situation,” Albreht cautioned.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to specific instructions provided by the Rescue Belt team at the roadside. “Drivers should not turn, drive in the opposite direction, or change lanes from left to right. They must await guidance at the incident location.”

Nejc Štremfelj, representing the Ga institute, echoed Albreht’s concerns regarding driver behavior and the continued need for public awareness campaigns to promote safe rescue belt procedures on slovenian roadways.

The focus remains on ensuring drivers understand and implement these vital safety measures.
