If he wants to go to school, he must swim across the river full of crocodiles

Children Face Heightened Climate Risks, Report Highlights

A newly released 2026 Children’s Climate Risk Report underscores the disproportionate vulnerability of children to the impacts of climate change. The report details children’s exposure to eight primary climate threats, including coastal flooding, droughts, extreme heat, wildfires, heat waves, river floods, sand and dust storms, and tropical storms. Recent imagery released by the United Nations depicts a stark reality: children in Papua New Guinea navigating crocodile-filled rivers to access education.

A critical bridge connecting remote villages to the town was destroyed by heavy rainfall, and reconstruction efforts have not commenced. One such child is 15-year-old Lorna, who regularly swims across the Kemp Welch river in Launkalana, Rigo district, to attend school. This perilous journey highlights the challenges faced by communities impacted by climate-related disasters.

The report emphasizes the urgent need to address climate change and mitigate its effects, particularly on vulnerable populations like children. Access to education and basic services is being severely disrupted by increasing climate risks, demanding immediate attention and sustainable solutions.
