Social media ban: almost 70 percent of children have kept access

The Australian National Office for Internet Security has issued a critical warning to government officials regarding the continued use of social media by young people. According to a report by The Guardian, numerous children under the age of 16 still maintain accounts on various platforms. A recent survey involving 900 Australian parents revealed a concerning trend.

Approximately one-third (31%) of the surveyed parents stated that their children continued to possess one or more social media accounts following the implementation of restrictions. This figure contrasts sharply with the 49% observed prior to the enactment of the laws. The survey data indicates that a substantial 70% of all children under 16 who previously utilized Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok have retained access to these platforms.

Authorities have identified a significant issue, highlighting the need for greater action. Minister Anika Sharma emphasized that social networks, including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube, are currently under investigation for potential breaches of regulations. “Tech companies have not done enough” to protect vulnerable children within the digital space.

The investigation focuses on ensuring compliance with existing rules concerning access for young people to online social media.
