‘There is no question about whether an accident will happen at sea, but when’

Splitska Vrata: High Traffic Volume Raises Navigation Concerns

Splitska vrata, a narrow sea strait in Croatia, is identified as one of the busiest maritime areas within the country, according to Aleš Rotar. The location serves as a critical transit point for numerous ferry connections servicing nearby islands, including Vis, Šolta, Brač, Hvar, and the Pakleni Islands. It also represents a key route for significant tourist traffic.

Rotar highlighted the considerable congestion experienced there, particularly during the summer months, noting that this high density of traffic substantially increases the potential for maritime accidents. Modern vessels employed in the area utilize advanced navigation systems to mitigate these risks. These include radar, electronic charts, and other sophisticated technology.

Furthermore, the Automatic Identification System (AIS) plays a vital role in detecting other vessels. Despite these technological advancements, Rotar emphasized the continued importance of physical observation. “Boats at speeds of 20 or more can be detected by other vessels at a distance of up to 100 meters,” he explained.

The location’s characteristics necessitate careful navigation practices to ensure safety within the busy sea.
