Swiss Programmer Acquires Extensive Land Holdings Through Legal Loopholes

Jonas Lauwiner, a Swiss programmer, amassed a significant land portfolio over several years by exploiting legal ambiguities within Swiss law. In 2019, Lauwiner declared himself “Symbolic King Jonas I” during a ceremony held at the Bern Niedegg church. The strategy involved identifying numerous parcels of land – encompassing meadows, forests, and roadways – that remained unregistered and unowned within the country.

Swiss law permits individuals to acquire ownership of these parcels through a symbolic payment and subsequent registration with local authorities. Over approximately five years, Lauwiner successfully acquired ownership of nearly 150 parcels, totaling more than 110,000 square meters of land. This acquisition was facilitated by leveraging the existing legal framework surrounding unclaimed property.

Currently, Lauwiner is renting out the land. The process highlighted a potential area of concern regarding land ownership registration within Switzerland. The Nexta portal reported on this development, detailing the actions of jonas and the legal circumstances surrounding his holdings.
