The campaign for the referendum on the parking ordinance in Ljubljana begins

Ljubljana Residents Prepare for Municipal Referendum

The municipal government of Ljubljana is preparing for a forthcoming referendum, following a significant citizen-led campaign. Organizers are required to establish special transaction accounts by Wednesday, June 17th, as mandated by the municipal electoral commission. Several political parties have formally registered for the referendum campaign.

The Pirate Party and the Party for Children and Families joined the initiative, with registrations closing on Thursday afternoon. A photograph illustrating the results of the signature collection will be publicly displayed. This referendum represents the third municipal referendum held in Ljubljana since the year 2000.

Notably, it is the first to be initiated through a large-scale, citizen-driven signature campaign. The core issue driving the referendum is public dissatisfaction with the municipal parking policy. Over 14,000 signatures were gathered in support of the initiative.

The referendum seeks to overturn a recently adopted decree that would re-regulate parking within Ljubljana neighborhoods, introducing paid parking and resident permits. The municipality has already passed a resolution to withdraw the original decree. The event underscores the importance of civic engagement within the municipal process.
