The government abolishes the temporary border control with Croatia and Hungary

The European Commission last week called on nine Schengen member states that are temporarily conducting border control to gradually phase out it. The countries that received the call include Slovenia, Italy and Austria. Slovenia has been conducting border control with Croatia and Hungary since October 2023, and extended it for six months until December 21.

It was introduced due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and increased terrorism risk, after Italy had introduced border control with Slovenia for the same reasons. Italy recently decided to extend it again. Today’s government found that the control is being discontinued and will not be extended.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs was instructed to inform EU member states, the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission about this.
