He started his football career at Rudar from Trbovlje, then tried out in the junior teams of NK Factor. He collected his first first-division minutes in the shirt of NK Šmartno, followed by a move to Germany, where he strengthened Hamburger SV. In between, he also gained experience on loan with Hansa Rostock and Erzgebirge Aue.
He also registered with Olimpija, but was forbidden to register new players.
