State budget: VAT as one of the options to fill the gap

Saving when the national budget is in the red, given the current 890 million deficit, will be inevitable. But what for? Although the newly appointed finance minister in Janša’s government, Andrej Šircelj, emphasizes that he is a supporter of as low taxes as possible, as the guardian of public finances points out: “It is equally important that the state does not run into a deficit, which must be achieved with different forms of taxes.

One of these is also value-added tax.” If we raised it from the current 22 percent by one percentage point, this would, according to a quick calculation, mean approximately 130 euros in additional costs per year for the average household, and up to 300 million euros could flow into the state budget. “This measure always exists. This is also proposed by the OECD,” Šircelj explains, but at the same time he adds that it is too early to speak about concrete numbers.
