Rare White Sea Lion Sighted During Net Removal Mission in Mediterranean Sea
A team of divers with the non-governmental organization Healthy Seas recently completed a mission to remove discarded fishing nets from shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. During operations approximately 40 meters below the surface between Sicily and Tunisia, a significant surprise occurred: a large white sea lion emerged from the water. Diver Derk Remmers captured the first underwater footage of an adult sea lion of this type in the Mediterranean Sea, as reported by Euronews and Sky News.
The sighting represents a rare occurrence, with previous observations of this species in the region limited to surface sightings. “We were all somewhat shocked and surprised,” Remmers stated to Euronews. “It was a big animal and we didn’t expect it at all.”
The presence of the white sea lion highlights the ongoing efforts to assess marine life populations within the Mediterranean sea.
While occasional sightings are recorded, this underwater observation marks a notable and unexpected event. Experts noted the significance of documenting this encounter, furthering understanding of marine biodiversity within this vital sea environment.
