From the golden harvest to zero price: the collapse of the potato market in Europe

Europe Grapples with Massive Potato Surplus

Europe is currently facing a significant surplus of approximately five million tonnes of industrial potatoes, creating a challenging situation for growers across the continent. The issue is particularly acute in Belgium, where some farmers are compelled to discard or donate potatoes due to lack of market demand. Farmer Kris D’haeyere, located in eastern Belgium, experienced significant losses after struggling to sell a thousand tonnes of potatoes following a protracted harvest.

The situation resulted in an estimated €160,000 in losses, prompting him to drastically reduce his potato sowing area for the upcoming season. The crisis stems from an exceptionally abundant harvest – the largest in Europe over the past eight years – coupled with a decline in export opportunities. Restrictions on American imports, implemented during the Trump administration, have limited access to a key market.

Simultaneously, increased competition from cheaper potato suppliers in Asia has intensified the pressure. Adding to the difficulties, rising oil exports from Iran are contributing to global market dynamics. This combination of factors has created a substantial surplus of potatoes within Europe.

The situation underscores the complex interplay of agricultural production, trade regulations, and global demand.
