Dispute in the Gulf of Koper: Ankaran against the construction of tanker berths

Ankaran Municipality Leads Opposition to Proposed Port Expansion

The Municipality of Ankaran has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the planned construction of a new tanker berth and gas terminal near the Port of Koper. This stance is supported by neighboring municipalities of Koper, Izola, and Piran, who share concerns regarding the potential long-term impacts of the project. Today, Gregor Strmčnik presented project documentation outlining proposals for extending the second pier of the Port of Koper.

The plan involves an 830-meter extension into the sea, intended to accommodate two tankers up to 300 meters in length. The project also includes infrastructure for the transshipment of liquefied petroleum gas and liquid chemicals. Concerns center on the potential consequences for local residents and property, as outlined by the state spatial plan.

Representatives from state authorities and the Port of Koper were present at the press conference to discuss the proposed construction. The municipalities involved are seeking a similar definition of the project’s implications to ensure comprehensive consideration of its effects. The debate highlights ongoing discussions surrounding port development and its impact on the coastal region.
