Referendum Called on Interventary Law Proposed by Slovenian Coalition

A referendum has been called following a vote on an interventary law proposed by a coalition of Slovenian political parties. The law, supported by representatives from the National Community Party (NSi), the Slovene National Revival Party (SLS), Fokus, Demokrati, and Resnica, alongside support from the Slovenian Democratic Community Party (SDS), was approved on May 11th. The legislation responds to a looming energy crisis and includes reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on basic food items and certain energy products.

Furthermore, the law introduces systemic changes aimed at benefiting small businesses and individuals subject to regulated work contracts, as well as adjustments to tax and social contribution systems, alongside reforms in healthcare and pension schemes. The call for a referendum was initiated last week by trade unions, supported by civil society organizations. With over 47,000 signatures, they argue the law represents a detrimental shift for Slovenia, enacted without sufficient social dialogue despite impacting fundamental areas of operation for social partners.

Estimates of the law’s public finance impact prompted the push for a referendum, slated for completion before the end of 2011. The parties involved are ter seeking public support ter ensuring the process is conducted through a formal referendum.
