We are returning to the acceptance of barbarism and it will affect all of us

Palestinian-American author Susan Abulhawa is the daughter of Palestinian refugees who were forced to leave their homes east of the Old City of Jerusalem three years before her birth during the Six-Day War in 1967. Her father was expelled by armed soldiers, and her mother, who was studying in Germany at the time, was unable to return to Palestine. The couple reunited in Jordan, then moved to Kuwait, where Susan was born in 1970.

After their parents’ separation, her childhood was even more turbulent, growing up between Kuwait, the USA, Jordan, and Palestine, and she spent three years even in a Jerusalem orphanage. She has lived in the USA since she was 13. Abulhawa has a master’s degree in neuroscience and has worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a researcher.

She began her writing career when she was 13.
