The Turkish press agency DHA and IHA initially reported that two people, the owner and the employee, had been killed in the restaurant shooting. The attacker was said to have killed two more people, a truck driver and a shepherd who was tending to his animals near the restaurant. Turkish President Erdogan then gave a new number of six fatalities, but did not provide any additional details regarding the incident that took place in the town of Tarsus, about 40 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Mersin in southern Turkey.
DHA initially reported that the attacker was armed with a whip, and that the 17-year-old was the perpetrator. The Turkish news agency Anadolu and the newspaper Sabah, which is being covered by the French news agency AFP, later reported that the wanted suspect was a 37-year-old man who was said to have shot his own wife.
