700 tons of fuel on a damaged Russian tanker in the Mediterranean

On March 3rd, further explosions impacted the 277-meter tanker, Artic Metagaz, resulting in considerable damage to the vessel, according to AFP reports. The crew was successfully rescued. The ship experienced severe harm; there were audible popping sounds within, alongside reported gas leaks.

It was also noted that the vessel was rapidly tilting more and more quickly, and localized fires were observed. Russian spokesperson, Maria Zaharova, detailed the situation on Monday, stating, “The ship suffered severe damage.” She explained that during the abandonment period, 450 tons of heavy fuel oil, 250 tons of diesel fuel, and substantial quantities of natural gas remained stored within its tanks. Any potential spill posed a serious risk, potentially leading to long-term pollution of the surrounding area.

The russian authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the more frequent explosions.
