The past week, a broad anticyclone over the North Atlantic and a slowly moving cyclone over southern Scandinavia towards southern Europe pulled cold Arctic air. Temperatures have been more than a week below average for this time of year. The damage to agriculture was caused mainly by night frosts, as well as numerous thunderstorms with heavy rain, strong winds and hail.
Between 11 and 16 May, about 750,000 lightning strikes were recorded in Europe and its surroundings. A temperature reversal is expected in the coming days, according to The Guardian. At the end of the week, an anticyclone (high-pressure area) should strengthen over western Europe, coming from north Africa, which will bring more cold air from the north of Africa.
