Heavy snowfall and strong winds have blanketed the Gorski kotar and Lika regions since this morning, creating challenging winter conditions. Coastal areas are experiencing powerful winds, leading to restrictions for certain vehicle types in several locations. Road closures are currently in effect due to the adverse weather.
The Croatian Automobile Club (Hak) reports that there is no open road connection for trucks with trailers and semi-trailers attempting to reach the Croatian Adriatic or Istria coasts. Conversely, traffic is also impeded in the opposite direction. Hak officials strongly advise against travel on these roads unless drivers are certain of their accessibility.
The Croatian State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has issued a red warning for the Rijeka area, citing hurricane winds, and a separate warning for Gospić due to a combination of strong winds and significant snowfall. Notably, three containers were reportedly swept out to sea from the Rijeka port as a result of the intense winds. Firefighters have been actively engaged in combating fires within the Rijeka area.
Some roads remain impassable due to these conditions.
