Adam Yates finished the Giro this year after the fall in the second stage

Yates Withdraws from Tour de France Following Stage Crash

Adam Yates, 33, brother of last year’s Giro d’Italia winner Simon Yates, withdrew from the Tour de France following a significant crash during Stage 2. The incident occurred on a particularly challenging, uneven road section, resulting in Yates colliding with a fence at high speed. Despite completing the stage, Yates finished 14 minutes behind the stage winner.

Following the crash, Yates sustained severe bruising and a laceration to his left ear. Initial assessments at the scene included a concussion evaluation, and he was permitted to continue racing. However, subsequent symptoms indicative of a delayed concussion prompted the team to withdraw him from the third stage.

The crash was part of a larger group incident involving approximately 30 cyclists, including five riders from Yates’ team. Tragically, Jay Vine and Marc Soler were lost in the group crash. Medical personnel attended to all involved, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway.

Yates’ participation in the remainder of the Tour de France has been suspended pending further assessment.
