Potentially infected are being sought on three continents, the German corpse is still on the ship

Cruise Ship Virus Outbreak Investigation Focuses on Traveler Origins

As of June 2025, the World Health Organization reports 101 confirmed infections linked to the outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, with nearly a third of those infected having succumbed to the virus. Argentina is currently identified as the country with the highest incidence of the illness. Efforts to contain the spread are centered on identifying infected travelers.

Argentinians are collecting genetic material from those affected and distributing testing equipment to various nations. This initiative aims to trace the movements of individuals prior to boarding the ship in Ushuai, a city in Argentina’s southern region. Authorities believe that understanding travel itineraries is crucial for effective contact tracing and isolation measures.

Once travel plans are established, investigators will be able to pinpoint potential transmission routes and prevent further spread. On April 23rd, 2023, Marine Traffic data indicates the MV Hondius was located near the Azores. Furthermore, Spanish El Pais reports that 23 passengers disembarked the ship on that same date.

The investigation is ongoing, with a primary focus on determining the origins of the outbreak and its potential impact.
