Slovenia Boasts Rich Avian Diversity

Slovenia is recognized for its significant biodiversity, with a remarkable variety of bird species recorded within the country. To date, a total of 385 bird species have been observed, including 228 that establish breeding grounds within Slovenia’s borders. The country supports a diverse range of avian activity, encompassing resident populations, migratory visitors, and wintering birds.

Many species remain in Slovenia throughout the year, while others are seasonal residents, utilizing the country for nesting or overwintering. Notably, the bee-eater ( Merops apiaster) is a frequently observed and highly admired bird. This vibrant species returns to Slovenia from its African wintering grounds in late April, departing in late August.

Bee-eaters primarily inhabit open mosaic cultural landscapes associated with lowland river floodplains. Their diet consists largely of insects, particularly bees, wasps, hornets, dragonflies, and beetles – a key factor in their presence, as highlighted by the Kozjanski Park. Researchers recognize one of the most colorful bird species, and consequently one of the most admired species, thrives in these environments.

Further research continues to document the diverse range of birdlife found within Slovenia.
