President Pirc Musar Declines to Nominate Candidate for Minority Government

Ljubljana – President of the Republic Nataša Pirc Musar has announced she will not nominate a candidate in the second round of parliamentary elections, following consultations with parliamentary groups. The decision, announced approximately a week ago, stems from a lack of consensus and a perceived absence of necessary trust. Pirc Musar, who was the sole candidate for Prime Minister after the initial March elections, stated that discussions with the various parliamentary groups revealed no individual garnering sufficient majority support.

She explained that she does not intend to propose a candidate for the leadership of the anticipated minority government. Last weekend, the President formally communicated her decision to the President of the National Assembly, Zorana Stefanović, via letter. This communication outlined concerns regarding a lack of respect and trust demonstrated during the consultations.

Ultimately, she did not secure the required votes to proceed. The President’s action reflects a significant development in the formation of Slovenia’s next government, highlighting the challenges associated with establishing a stable minority government. The intention remains to appoint a mandate holder, but the path forward remains uncertain following the refusal to nominate a candidate.

This decision underscores the difficulty in securing support for a new government and the President’s determination not to participate in a process she felt lacked fundamental elements.
