EU Expansion Remains a Priority, Though Western Balkans Skepticism Persists
Brussels – The prospect of further expansion within the European Union is increasingly likely, according to European Commissioner Marta Kos. Speaking recently, Kos highlighted the potential for the first enlargement to include Albania, following a broader trend of candidate nations seeking membership. Kosova expressed optimism that the process would serve as a positive model, encouraging other countries in the Western Balkans to pursue similar pathways.
Achieving candidate status remains the initial step for nations hoping to join the bloc. Bosnia and Herzegovina, which formally received candidate status in 2022 after applying in 2016, is also part of this potential expansion. Recent commentary, as reported by Klix.ba, noted the complexities involved, stating “You can’t sit on two stools” regarding Serbia’s aspirations.
Several countries have been engaged in the accession process for extended periods. Turkey has been a candidate since 1999, North Macedonia since 2005, Montenegro since 2010, and Serbia since 2012. Croatia completed its accession in 2013.
The EU continues to assess applications from potential member states, with ongoing discussions focused on reforms and benchmarks necessary for integration.
