Belgium is turning its back: the country wants to take over nuclear power plants

Belgium Reverses Course, Announces Halt to Nuclear Phase-Out

Belgium has announced a significant shift in its energy policy, reversing a decades-long trend toward phasing out nuclear energy. The decision, confirmed by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, reflects a desire to diminish the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and bolster domestic energy control, according to reports from Deutsche Welle (DW). The plan involves taking full ownership of Belgium’s seven nuclear reactors, encompassing all associated staff, infrastructure, and existing obligations, particularly concerning nuclear waste management.

Currently, only two of the reactors are operational. However, a recently agreed-upon deal will halt the previously planned decommissioning of the remaining facilities. This reversal follows Belgium’s official abandonment of a 20-year-old plan to close nuclear power plants in 2023.

Recent years have also seen extensions to the operational lifespans of some of the country’s oldest nuclear reactors. Energy Minister Robert Habeck stated, “A big mistake is that we turned away from nuclear energy.” The move represents a notable change in strategy for the country, prioritizing a more secure and diversified energy future. Belgium’s commitment now centers on maintaining its energy independence and reducing its dependence on external sources.
