Large Jellyfish Bloom in the Gulf of Trieste
The Gulf of Trieste has experienced a significant increase in the population of large jellyfish over the past several days, resulting in a surge of photographs and images circulating online. The dominant species observed is Rhizostoma pulmo, a native jellyfish to the region, frequently present throughout the entire Gulf. According to Andreja Ramšak, a senior research associate at the National Institute of Biology, this proliferation is a natural part of the jellyfish’s life cycle.
Specifically, them – the medusa – have developed from small polyps through a process called strobilation. This stage is crucial for sexual reproduction, with the larger jellyfish now prepared for spawning. Ramšak explained that the medusae have grown from initial polyps, reaching their current size to facilitate this reproductive event.
Rhizostoma pulmo is a commonly observed species in the trieste area. This phenomenon of increased jellyfish numbers is a recurring event, representing the medusa’s active reproductive generation. The increased presence of them highlights the natural processes occurring within the Gulf.
