Tampa Wreckage Found After Over a Century
The wreckage of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Tampa, lost during World War I, has been discovered nearly 91 meters below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The find, announced by the U.S.
Coast Guard, marks the culmination of a decades-long search and confirms the ship’s final moments. In 1915, the Tampa, along with its 131 crew members, was targeted by a German submarine commander off the coast of southern England. The sighting of the Tampa’s silhouette occurred as evening twilight descended, prompting the order to fire a torpedo.
Tragically, three minutes later, the vessel sank, resulting in the loss of the entire crew – a devastating maritime casualty. This event represents the largest loss of U.S. forces during World War I.
The discovery was made by the Gasperados team, who initially reported locating the wreckage in 2015. A British diving team subsequently confirmed the find last weekend, approximately 80 kilometers off the coast of Cornwall. The recovered wreckage provides a tangible link to the tragic fate of the Tampa and its crew, offering a poignant reminder of the conflict’s impact.
Further investigation of the wreckage is planned.
