Robots will help in the transportation of luggage at airports

Japan Airlines to Deploy Humanoid Robots for Airport Luggage Transport

Tokyo – Japan Airlines (JAL) will initiate a permanent trial program utilizing humanoid robots to address labor shortages at Haneda Airport, according to a report by The Guardian. The trial, commencing in May, will see the robots, manufactured by Unitree in Hangzhou, China, responsible for transporting luggage and cargo on the airport’s platform. Haneda Airport serves over 60 million passengers annually.

JAL, in partnership with Japan Airlines GMO Internet Group, anticipates the trial, scheduled to conclude in 2028, will alleviate pressure on airport staff as tourism increases and a significant labor shortage is projected. The robots, standing approximately 130 centimeters tall, were demonstrated this week as they carefully maneuver cargo onto conveyor belts adjacent to aircraft. The initiative aims to streamline baggage handling operations and mitigate the impact of rising passenger volume.

This pilot program represents a strategic response to ongoing challenges within the aviation sector and reflects a growing interest in utilizing robotics to optimize airport logistics.
