Overburdened, with symptoms of depression and anxiety

Study Reveals High Work Hours for Slovenian Specialists

A recent study involving 6,165 specialists across 26 European countries, including 264 Slovenian specialists, has revealed concerning trends regarding working hours and contract compliance within the healthcare sector. The research indicates that, on average, Slovenian specialists work 54 hours per week. Almost 62 percent of Slovenian specialists report working 24-hour shifts, with an average of five night shifts per month.

Furthermore, almost a third do not utilize at least four weeks of their annual leave. Within the Slovenian cohort, almost 92 percent of specialists worked beyond the parameters of their employment contracts during the past year. Almost half of those exceeding their contracted hours were not compensated for the additional time.

“Specialists are one of the first on the battle line or the most exposed in the healthcare system,” stated Polona Gams Brulc, an anaesthesiologist from the Association of Young Doctors of Slovenia. The findings align with broader European data, where specialists across 26 countries average 54 hours of work per week, with a significant proportion working extended shifts. This highlights a systemic issue impacting healthcare professionals across Europe.
