800,000 euros in compensation, and no one held criminally responsible

Court Orders Serbia to Pay Compensation Following Novi Sad Railway Shelter Collapse

Novi Sad, Serbia – The Serbian state, including the railway infrastructure, is facing significant financial repercussions following a court ruling connected to the November 1, 2024, collapse of a railway station shelter. Sixteen individuals died and one person sustained severe injuries and permanent disability as a result of the tragedy. The ruling mandates the payment of court costs alongside compensation for mental pain and suffering related to the loss of a close family member.

This judgment remains subject to appeal. The court has already issued hundreds of thousands of euros in compensation to the families of the deceased, recognizing the profound emotional distress caused by the deaths. A formal indictment has been filed by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad against thirteen suspects.

These include former Minister of Infrastructure Goran Vesic and former Director of Infrastructure Railways of Serbia, Jelena T. The collapse, which occurred at the Novi Sad railway station, prompted a widespread investigation into the structural integrity of the shelter. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the disaster and assessing the responsibilities involved.

The ongoing legal proceedings aim to determine accountability and secure appropriate compensation for the victims and their families. The railway remains a focal point of the investigation.

  1. This is a deeply troubling outcome that highlights a serious lack of accountability for a preventable tragedy.
