Woman Dies After Bear Attack in Polish Forest

A woman died following an encounter with a brown bear in a remote area of the Podkarpatska region of Poland. Mountain rescue services, police, and firefighters responded to the location of the incident after reports were received. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a severely injured woman and were subsequently unable to administer aid.

She succumbed to her injuries shortly after their arrival, according to reports from the German news agency dpa and Polish TV station TVP. The woman was searching for discarded elk antlers with her son when the pair became separated. The son subsequently discovered his mother severely injured, with a brown bear present.

Local media identified the woman and her son as residents of the area. Authorities are advising residents of the nearby village to remain in their homes until further notice. Poland currently estimates a population of approximately 100 brown bears, primarily concentrated in the Bieszczady Mountains.

While attacks by brown bears are rare, this incident highlights the potential risks. Data from 2024 indicates that when such encounters occur, they are exceptionally dangerous. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.
