Rise in Nicotine Pouches Sparks Concern Among Health Officials
The use of nicotine pouches, commonly known as “fug,” is increasingly prevalent across the Slovenian tobacco market, having significantly impacted the market over the past three years. Alarmingly, usage, particularly among young people, is demonstrating a concerning trend of escalation. Observations are being made at schools across the country.
At the Middle Electrical Computer School in Maribor (SERŠ Maribor), educators note a shift in student smoking habits, with a growing number of pupils transitioning to these new nikotinskih izdelkov rather than traditional cigarettes. “We are unable to effectively control the use of these fug because they are consumed orally,” explains Irena Srša Žnidarič, the headmistress of SERŠ Maribor. “We do discuss the potential harms of these products on classroom lessons, and they are likely more detrimental than conventional tobacco.”
The National Institute for Public Health (NIJZ) echoes these concerns, reporting that approximately 13 to 14 percent of secondary school students utilize these nikotinskih izdelkov.
Experts emphasize the need for further research into the specific health risks associated with these pouches and strategies to mitigate their increasing popularity within the broader market of tobačnih izdelkov.
