President Zoran Stevanović discussed the costs associated with the Baltic High-Speed Rail project on Monday. He addressed the question of how much a kilometer of the track costs, comparing figures for different sections of the project. Specifically, he noted that one kilometer of the main Baltic track within Slovenia costs seven million euros.
In contrast, a kilometer of the Rail Baltic route connecting the Baltic countries themselves is estimated at 44 million euros. Stevanović adjusted this figure upwards to 25 million euros, citing the challenging conditions encountered in the Kras region. He further asserted that corruption related to the project would likely incur an additional 600 million euros.
If this sum were distributed amongst all Slovenian families, Stevanović suggested, it would provide a substantial holiday allowance for each. Initially, the 870-kilometer Baltic High-Speed Rail project, representing the largest infrastructure undertaking in the Baltic countries over the past century, was projected to cost approximately 4.5 billion euros in 2019. However, by 2020, the estimated cost had already decreased to 25 million euros.
