Israeli authorities allowed the Russian cargo ship Abinsk to unload approximately 44,000 tons of wheat in Haifa Port between April 12th and 14th, despite prior warnings from Ukraine. The Abinsk transported the wheat from occupied territories, a shipment that Ukraine anticipates Israel will seize. Ukraine had informed Israeli officials in advance about the planned shipment and expressed concerns that import operations involving such cargo would be “unacceptable.” The Times of Israel reported that the Foreign Ministry received assurances of a response to the situation.
The wheat originated from four regions previously occupied by Nazi forces in Ukraine. Following the unloading, Israel is expected to take action regarding the shipment. The Ukrainian Ministry stated it was “worrying” that the ship was permitted to dock and unload despite the information shared and ongoing discussions between the parties.
The incident highlights a potential point of contention between Israel and Ukraine regarding the import of goods from occupied territories.
