The Slovene flag, a tricolor of white, blue, and red, was officially adopted in 1848 as a symbol of the nation’s revival. The colors were chosen by Slovene people, drawing inspiration from the colors present in the coat of arms of the Duchy of Carniola and presented to the Austrian administration for approval. The flag’s initial development occurred in 1848, spearheaded by Slovene students in Vienna.
On April 7th of that year, the flag was first raised in Ljubljana, specifically on the building of the Golden Star Inn on Wolf Street. Student Lovro Toman is credited with raising the flag, a response to the display of the German flag atop Ljubljana Castle. According to the government website, this action signified a key moment in the burgeoning national movement.
The Slovene flag, alongside the national coat of arms and anthem, is recognized as a significant emblem of the Republic of Slovenia, representing a connection to one’s homeland. The Heraldica Slovenica Society plans to commemorate this historic day on April 12th.
