Demi Vollering of FDJ United-SUEZ reacted to the outcome of Friday’s stage when Kasii Niewiadomi-Phinney of Canyon-SRAM gained the overall lead by escaping to the Mont Ventoux. Niewiadomi-Phinney established a time gap of 1 minute and 16 seconds over Vollering on the famous mountain. Earlier in the day, Vollering had managed the stage and appeared poised to maintain the overall classification lead.
However, on the final climb, which was not officially categorized, Vollering delivered a strong effort. She was challenged by Niewiadoma-Phinney, and also by Elisa Longo Borghini of UAE Team L’Imad, who reportedly fainted just before the summit. Following this performance, Demi Vollering secured the overall lead in the Tour de France.
