The decision was made because severe landslides, resulting from storm activity in February, have compromised the accessibility and safety of the original path. According to the organizers, the landslides have damaged the necessary roads leading to the Hazallanas Pass, meaning the required safety conditions for the ascent could not be met.
To ensure the continuation of the race while maintaining high safety standards, an alternative route has been selected. In an effort to keep the event as faithful as possible to its original design, the organizers have opted to replace the ascent to the steep Hazallanas Pass with an ascent to El Duque Pass. Officials stated that this substitution was carefully chosen because it preserves the core difficulty, overall challenge, and profile of the final stage, closely mirroring the original intended course.
The adjustment ensures that the integrity of the race remains intact despite the unforeseen logistical hurdles presented by the damaged infrastructure.
